Admissions: Starting Treatment at Dunn Recovery

One phone call, answered at any hour, by somebody who knows what beds are free. This page explains exactly what happens from that call to the day you arrive, so nothing about it is a surprise.

Six beds

What happens from here

Most detox happens in facilities built around thirty or more beds. Dunn Recovery has six, in a residential home.

STEP ONE

Call us

We ask what has been happening and tell you honestly whether we are the right place. If we are not, we will say so and help you find somewhere that is.

Takes about 20 minutes
STEP TWO

Benefits and planning

We check your PPO benefits at no cost and tell you what your plan is likely to cover before you commit to anything.

Usually the same day
STEP THREE

Arriving

We agree a time, go through what to bring, and someone meets you at the door.

When a bed is free

Same-day admission is often possible. See how same-day admission works →

What we ask, and what we do not

People put off calling because they do not know what they are walking into. Here is the whole of it.

What we will ask

What we will not do

Answer honestly, including the parts you would rather not

How much someone has actually been using is the single most important thing we need, because it decides whether detox here is safe for you. Nobody on this end is shocked, and nobody is keeping score.

Checking what your insurance covers

Dunn Recovery is out of network with all insurance providers

We work with most PPO plans on an out-of-network basis. We will check your benefits for free, by phone, and tell you what your plan is likely to cover before you commit to anything.

Payment plans are available. Please do not send policy numbers or medical details through a web form — call us and we will take them over the phone.

We cannot accept HMO plans, Medi-Cal, Medicare or Medicaid. If that is what you have, say so on the first call and we will point you towards somewhere that takes it rather than letting you find out later.

Arriving

Someone meets you

You arrive at a house, not a reception desk. Somebody is expecting you by name.

Intake

A private conversation before anything else, so the plan for your first few days fits your actual situation.

You are shown the house and where you will be sleeping. There is no rush on the first day.

The first night

Staff are on site through the night. If you need someone at three in the morning, someone is there.

What to bring

Bring

Do not worry about

Our admissions team goes through the full list with you on the phone before you arrive, including anything that cannot come into the house.

What we are able to treat

Dunn Recovery is licensed by the California Department of Health Care Services for two levels of care: detox and residential treatment.

We can help with

We will refer you elsewhere for

We would rather tell you that on the first call than halfway through an admission.

Everyone is welcome here

We treat men and women. Who you are, who you love and how you identify make no difference to whether you can be admitted or how you will be treated once you are.

If you are ringing about a partner, a child or a parent

A good number of our calls come from someone other than the person using. That is a normal call to make, and you do not need their permission to make it.

We will talk through what is realistic, what tends to work, and what usually does not. We will be honest if the answer is that they are not ready, because pretending otherwise helps nobody.

One thing worth knowing: federal privacy law is stricter for substance use treatment than for ordinary healthcare. Once someone is a client here, we generally cannot confirm to anyone — including a parent or a spouse — that they are here, without their written consent. We will explain how that works, and how families stay involved within it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can I be admitted?

Often the same day, when it is clinically appropriate and a bed is free. Because there are six beds, the person answering the phone knows immediately what is available rather than having to check.

We ask what has been going on, what you have been using and for how long, and whether you have any health conditions or prescriptions we should know about. It takes about twenty minutes and commits you to nothing.

No. You can call us directly.

Comfortable clothing, any prescribed medication in its original packaging, personal toiletries, photo ID and your insurance card if you have one. We go through the full list with you before you arrive.

We are out of network with all carriers and work with most PPO plans on an out-of-network basis. We will check your benefits free of charge before you commit. We cannot accept HMO plans, Medi-Cal, Medicare or Medicaid.

Yes, and many people do. We will talk through what is realistic and what tends to help.

Call anyway. A conversation is not an admission, and knowing what the options are tends to make the decision easier rather than harder.

Yes. We will not contact anyone else about your call, and we will not keep calling you if you ask us not to.

One call is all this takes to start

Someone answers 24 hours a day. The first call is a conversation, not a sales pitch — if we are not the right place, we will say so.
